Types of concrete cutting

"Concrete cutting" covers several distinct methods, each suited to a different surface, depth, and job. Here's what each one actually does and when a shop reaches for it.

Flat (slab) sawing

The most common method: a walk-behind saw with a large diamond blade cuts horizontal surfaces — floors, driveways, sidewalks, and pavement. Depth is limited by the blade's radius, roughly up to 20–26 inches on large saws in a single pass; thicker sections need multiple passes or a different method. This is the default choice for removals, trenching, expansion joints, and any straight cut across a slab.

Wall sawing

For vertical or steeply angled surfaces — foundation walls, precast panels, bridge abutments — a track-mounted saw rides a rail bolted to the wall, keeping the cut straight and controlled overhead or sideways. It's the standard method for cutting door and window openings into existing concrete or masonry walls.

Wire sawing

A diamond-embedded cable loops around the section being cut and is drawn through the concrete by a powered pulley system. Because the wire wraps around the piece rather than plunging in from one side, depth is effectively unlimited — wire saws handle very thick or heavily reinforced sections, large openings, bridge and column work, and controlled demolition cuts that a blade-on-a-track simply can't reach.

Hand & ring sawing

Handheld saws — either a standard hand saw or a ring saw (a circular blade driven around its outer edge rather than a center arbor, letting it plunge-cut deeper for its size) — are used for tight spots, small cuts, and flush cuts where a walk-behind or track-mounted rig won't fit: utility notches, small openings, corner finishing after a larger saw leaves a rounded corner.

Curb cutting

A focused application of flat/hand sawing aimed at cutting through curbs and curb-and-gutter sections — typically for driveway approaches, accessibility ramps, or utility access. Usually a quicker, smaller-scale job than a full slab cut.

Joint & control-joint sawing

Shallow cuts made while concrete is still relatively fresh (usually within hours to a day or so of the pour) to create control joints — planned weak points that guide where the slab cracks as it cures and shrinks, instead of cracking randomly. This is a lighter-duty cut than sawing hardened concrete and is timed around the pour schedule rather than done on demand.

Wet vs. dry cutting

Most flat, wall, and wire sawing runs wet — water cools the blade and turns cuttings into slurry, which controls dust and extends blade life, but creates runoff that needs to be vacuumed or contained. Dry cutting, common with smaller hand saws or where water isn't practical, relies on the blade and a vacuum to manage dust instead. Ask which a shop plans to use and how they'll handle cleanup, especially indoors or near a storm drain.
